Sleeping Babies
Another Hi-Way Cup has gone and another name has been etched into history, it seems to be harder and harder for anyone to go back to back with all the young guns stepping up and showing us all what they are about and Deon Baker did exactly this, his first run was a little reserved at 1.40.90 after seeing one of his good buddy James Ross go down hard, but his next run he let it all hang out improving his time to 1.38.56 putting him into the top five fastest with Dr Dean 1.39.03, Mik 1.39.59, Sproggy 1.39.71 and Mitch 1.39.79 thats right Dr Dean the Vets National Champ from the East took out Elite on the day catching a few of the boys unaware and still leaving the door open for Matt Bell who was away working, he says he will be back no matter what for Welli Mills to give Mik a run for the overall. The Sport field had a new winner with Abe Whaanga schooling Housey by a couple and Jason Chilcott milli seconds behind in 3rd, this result still keeps Housey in 1st overall and he should be able to extend the lead at the Mills. Mel Mothersole has come into the Womens Elite picture a little to late to put any real pressure on Stefs overall lead but this could be a real challenge in 2007. Stu Macdonald took Expert Nik Ikin must of been putting in some training with a seriously fast time and Ryhs Thomas finished 3rd followed by the Twinnys who cant seem to shake each other. Another name to keep a eye on is Dave “Dangerous” Berry on his Hard Tail STP he was going hard all day taking out Hardtail with a 1.41.36 and a “no footed can can” over the table at the finish, Darcy Albrey was 2nd still holding onto the overall points lead followed by Aaron Tenardi. A lot of people will remember Dave Berry in 2003 and 2004 when he gave us all a nudge on his Kona but then dissappeared of the scene, he seems to only turn up to the big races to give us all the shits but if he gets another Dually and starts racing again we better be ready. Paul Starling cemented the overall Masters title just nudging in front of the host Nevesy with the old Wino Chrisso some how pulling a 3rd in front of Hadley which now puts Chrisso back into 3rd place overall. The next big thing after Deon Baker is Under 13’s Jacob Parker on his Hi-Way Cycles Sponsored Norco pulling a super fast 1.59.00 flat which placed him up there with some of the big boys this little fella is going to just get faster and faster, Byrne came 2nd and Wilsher 3rd. Under 15’s was hotly contested with Chris Thomson taking it out Toby Gaskell 2nd and Tom Orr 3rd. Holly Baarspul once again took out the U15 Womens so come on girls if you know you can do it get your bike and give this girl some one to race against. Choko hurt the U17 field only just with a 1.48.10 just in front of Everett 1.49.36 and Hadley 1.49.36 you could of thrown a blanket over the rest of them they were all so close. Under 19’s we know who won but hot on his tailn was Ranga 1.40.60 and Jack 1.42.79 these guys are smoking. Vets Shane Dobson with a tidy time of 1.40.80 Nabbsy 1.44.47 and Nige Dobson 1.44.84 I know your all wondering why Dobbo is racing in Vets I dont think he knows maybe he likes beating up old blokes? Kylie took out Vet Womens 2.18.18 a fair stretch in front of 2nd place Mullet Woman and Kathleen.
Top 30 time and top 3 Women it was tense at the top of the hill with Cup Glory on the line. Sproggy was doing his best impression of a Phillipino garden gnome going all quiet and channeling Imelda for strength to bust out the triple and thats just what happened him and Mik went the big one the crowd orgasmed so did the midgets but it still wasnt enough for the win because Baker pushed his Glory to another level and improved his time again to a 1.37.38 which was enough to have his name scratched into W.A Down Hill History for ever, Deon didnt even use the triple if he did his time would of been even faster. A brilliant day yet again with the rain clouds staying away all day, pitty we didnt get to run the Dash For Cash but time ran out any way it was a solid day of riding.
