Well it’s done & dusted, mixed results for the aussies in the morning with Ben & Joel crashing out, James Maltman was an awesome 5th on a busted up ankle & Mitch Delfs was an awesome 7th highest place west aussie & ben was 9th even with his big digger. It pains me to think where the boys could have come, but me know they are true champions on & off the bike and mark my words, their day WILL come!
Joel was in alot of pain after his run but came good after 2 or 20 beers later at the party! Funny story, some of the kiwi team found Joel on a park bench after the party & carried him back to the hotel. I woke Ben & Joel up this morning both with very second hand heads, Joel’s still in bed frequantly re-visting what he drank last night if u get my drift I sooooo could have videod him but I refrained casue he’d prolly kick my arse if we had to duke it out over the tape!
The boys are in a better mood today which is great. All is good. We are going to hit up some of the local tracks in the next day or two which I’m looking forward to gettin some good footage on these awesome tracks.
Sambo schooled the field, the margin was big on this track and he was def the best by far, there was lines where 95% of the field would take, then Rennie, Minnar, Peat & Kovarik would take the sick line and then Sambo would go where no man feared, truly awesome to watch riders of the above mentioned caliber shaking thier heads at Sam’s lines. In one steeeeep section with drops, & I mean steeeeeeeep (has to been seen to believed) most riders were going high or around, a few rolled straight & Sambo just gapped it. Kovarik & Minnar tried to gap it in practice but niether pulled it off and didnt do it in their runs.
In the press conference sambo didnt say much & looked like he just rolled down for a win at a local track in WA. One journo said “Sam u just won mate smile!” Sambo got a bit of a smile going but gee the way he rides & speaks is world’s apart. He kept it all very under wraps like a true champion.
Sam said he took it pretty easy in qualifying as qualifying 1st at last years worlds put too much pressure on him and when the last rider leaves the gate they usually hear all the riders times before them which doesnt help (something rennies also commenated about & said he wished he hadn’t heard).
Sam siad he basically just focused on what was coming up & had a flawless run. Watching on the big screen down the bottom this was plain to see, everyone made atleast one tiny mistake here or there, a foot down here, check up after running a tad wide etc not Sambo, he really did pin it and his run was like he said, flawless.
Kovarik lead for ages and actually had the 2nd fast top section split overall till sam went .550 under then smoked the bottom of the course to make up several seconds. Minnar, Peat & Rennie were all about 2-4 seconds behind Sam on the split and when rennie went thro 3 seconds down I knew Sambo had it in the bag.
What a day, at the podium the aussies drowned out the announcer and the piss weak cries from a few other countries. It was sick, aussie aussie auisse oi oi oi. Graves had a mega phone and the national anthem went nuts. Sambo stood with one clenched fist in the air while the crowd went nuts like I’ve never seen before. I was so proud to be an aussie but most of all a WEST AUSSIE!
Thanks for the updates Ira Iam sure iam speaking for all the West Aussies.

The junior finals have just been completed & the elite men & women are about to start. I wish I had good news but unfortunatley it wasn’t our day, two kiwis took out 1st & 2nd. Ben & Joel both crashed hard & I must say I feel pretty upset for them, Joel clipped a pedal coming into a big gap jump where u have to clear a root, he hit the root & his balls slammed the stem, over the bars & landed on his head. He is DEVESTATED & in quite a bit of pain, it’s fair to say it was tears all round, even I had a bit of a sooky sooky la la……. It’s hard to watch such awesome youngs kids have their guts ripped out.
Ben didn’t go much better & when I saw him rolling into the finish line I knew something was up. He crashed on a big step down, I’m pretty sure I saw 7th on the board when he came thro. He said he knew he was done for when he went over, needles to say he was also inconsolable but it was good to see the senior aussies like Amiel & Rando speaking to the boys straight after the runs. The team is pretty tight. I havent really spoken to them properly, just a quick question or two then I left them alone……..
Mitch had an okay run with a few small mistakes & James Maltman said he was happy with his run, not sure exactly where they ended up as results aren’t up yet.
The good news is Tracy Hannah won the junior womens by 4 seconds & was totally spent at the line. 1 gold for the aussies anyway…….
Elite men are about to start so I’m off……….
Fri 25 Aug 2006
Jill Kinter blitzed the womens to win by a country mile. 16 women showed up to race for the world title but only 8 did after big crashes in practice and the general scary nature of the course which really has to be seen to be believed.
In the press conference’s afterwards all the riders men & women talked about was how big & fast the course was & how they’d never ridden anything like it.
In the mens most of the aussies were out early as the format is brutal, all heats are elimination with only the top two going thro. Amiel crashed (front wheel wash out) whilst making a move on 2nd, Rando got caught up in someone else’s crash & was out and Strom had a tough draw and didn’t get thro. ALex Loyld was the only aussie past the 1st round but he was soon on the sidelines in the 2nd round.
Down to semi’s & a spot in the final up for grabs, most big names were left exept Gracia who was also out. Some french rider jumped into the 2nd turn right onto Lopes who went high, the low line has a jump & two into one don’t go. As you can imagine Lopes wasn’t happy and I saw him have words pointing to the french rider responsible. Lopes made the B final but didn’t make the trip back up the hill & packed up & went home early leaving only 3 to contest the B final.
Prokop got the holeshot in the final and Guido Tschugg was up to his usual tricks & layed down a rather questionable move on the first turn taking Roger Rinderkneckt high, Atherton turned down inside them both rocketing up to 2nd. Down the big straight Porkop lead easily and coming into turn 3 just before the wallride Tschugg layed down a text book T Bone on Atherton wrecking Atherton’s race, Roger went thro for 2nd and Atherton limped home last.
Dead set it was as dirty a move that I’ve ever seen, if it was bmx he’d be banned. Funny thing was everyone at the press conference acted like nothing had happened! It didn’t change the colour of Tschuggs medal as he was in 3rd anyway but Atherton after being in the silver medal spot goes home with nothing. Fiar dinkum I reckon UCI needs to clean up it’s act on the T Bone in 4X, it really doesnt look very professinal, racing is racing but that kinda stuff doesnt take skill.
I was right at the finish line and the aussies were leaning over the fence booing and Ameil was giving the thumbs down. All the cameras flocked to new world champ Prokop who after breaking his leg last year has had an amazing year, world cup champ & now world champ.
I noticed that not one journo or camera interviewed Atherton after the race so I went over and asked him what he thought of “that” move. I tell you what he’s a better person than me casue he was very diplomatic and said “everyone is so hungry in the final, I just saw this big red flash come up the inside……”
All in all I had a good day, a few showers overnight cleared but left the DH course muddy. I mainly did interviews in the morning, it was pretty cool lining up to interview Steve Peat, Minnar, Rennie, Kovarik, Rando, Ameil & then Bell & Bain!
All the aussie juniors said they took their seeding runs easy & had plenty left in the tank at the end of the run. James Maltman over jumped the big dam jump (yes they jump right over a dam) said he had too much speed as it was the 1st run he’d done in the skinsuits and blew his ankle out, he’s still riding but it’s giving him grief. Other then that the other aussies are lookin good, Rennie says he feels good as did Mick Hannah, Sambo said something but I didn’t hear what he said…
Whilst in the Aussie team pit talking to former west aussie Sarah Booth about “back in the day” this kiwi guys rocks up with this awesome motorised DH bike, Mick Hannah rode it around a bit & reckons it turns just like a DH bike. It’s got a 125cc engine, all the fruit, VERY well built & designed & retails for about $8000 aussie, it was pretty cool & had everyone drooling, Gracia loved it! Awesome for training, the guy said the SAS has just brought a heap of him, they tested em & love em.
Saw Mick from highways today & a few more WA crew.
Tomorrows the big one, final DH runs to decide who reins the world, forecast is for evening showers so hopefully they come late & it isn’t too much of a disadvantage for those going last which is Ben, Joel & Mitch, either way it should be good & I can’t wait!

Kiwi local Sam Blenkinsop qualified first with a 3:17:39, then Brendan Fairclough 1.99 seconds back, Steve Smith (Canada) 2.23, Ben is in 4th 6.48 seconds back, Joel is 7th 13.12 back Alex Swann 13.30, James Maltman 12th, Mitch delfs is 13th & James Brodie was 40th. From what i saw (ben sitting down not peddling!) don’t worry I yelled my lungs out at him! the aussies have plenty left in reserve so we are looking good don’t worry. None of the aussies boys let it all hang out.
The mens times aren’t up yet but it went something like Rennie, Peat, Minnar, Hannah, Sambo was 6th I think……….Rando & Ameil were about 15thish I think…
Check the UCI site they will be up soon.
All in all had an awesome day, saw more WA crew, Deon & james Ross, Lairdy & triggers. Saw some good diggers including a dude from brazil pop his elbow out.
Might post more later if not it’s 4X finals tomorrow which should be awesome.

The Prez has been at it again this time he was driving the Hilux in Dunsborough and a skippy jumped out and he avoided it by driving the Hilux over an embankment and flipping it onto its roof. He didnt go to the Doc’s until the next morn when the pain got a little to much to bare. Lairdette sent me this pic, he said Bukit was walking around the room like a zomby not saying saying a word, luckily he didnt break any bones just heaps of bruising and a little whiplash.
